    Language-Appropriate Healthcare and Medical Language Education

    Language is the principal tool that clinicians use in providing healthcare. Populations with non- English language preferences (NELP) are more likely to experience health inequities, such as worse clinical outcomes and less satisfaction with care compared to English-speaking patients. Additionally, the standard use of language in healthcare communication may be ineffective for patients with sensory or cognitive impairments.

    Despite known benefits and needs, there is a paucity of existing published educational materials and curricula that teach students and practitioners how to provide equitable patient-centered language-appropriate care. To improve the healthcare of populations with NELP and with sensory or cognitive impairments, MedEdPORTAL launched the Language-Appropriate Health Care and Medical Language Collection.

    Please join co-collection editors Débora H. Silva Díaz MD, MEd and Pilar Ortega, MD, MGM in a session that aims to orient attendees to the collection and encourage them to submit their educational scholarship by providing submission guidelines and specific examples.

    All are welcome.

    Confronting Flexner Speaker series

    In a world ridden with health disparities and social inequities, the scholarship and innovation of Black women will help establish healthcare and research institutions that adequately serve all members of society. 

    Nowhere is this more critically important than in medicine today, because the past two years have shown us that access to proper healthcare is not available to everyone. This includes creating innovative and cost-effective solutions to problems that are effective for the whole society, not just those traditionally represented.

    Erika Jefferson is is the President and Founder of Black Women in Science and Engineering (BWISE), an organization focused on bridging the leadership gap for Black women in STEM. She received her MBA from Georgia Tech and her BS in Chemical Engineering from LSU. She has worked for top companies such as Amoco, BP, Chevron, and Praxair in a myriad of leadership and executive roles ranging from sales/business development to supply chain and operations excellence. Her more than two decades of experience led her across the nation from Chicago, to Greenville, Charlotte, Atlanta, and eventually Houston.
