In this talk, Dr. Logan Fiorella will discuss empirical research on the benefits and boundary conditions of two types of generative learning activities—learning by explaining and learning by visualizing. Explaining and visualizing can both support student understanding, yet many students need explicit prompting and guidance to use generative activities effectively. Fiorella's research suggests ways to support generative learning by (a) leveraging the unique and complementary benefits of explaining and visualizing, and (b) striking the appropriate balance between learner-generated and instructor-provided representations.
